A day after a scuffle broke out between two factions of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) at a party meeting held in Deonar, NCP leaders Nawab Malik and Sanjay Dina-Patil and seven others were on Wednesday booked under attempted murder and rioting charges. The police have registered cross-complaints from both sides involved in the scuffle.

On Tuesday, Malik had alleged that he was attacked by armed men allegedly sent by the party's former MP Sanjay Dina Patil, and alleged that Patil also fired a few shots to target him. Denying the allegations levelled by Malik, Patil alleged that he was attacked by Malik's men with swords and choppers and that his bodyguard only took out his licensed revolver for defence, but did not fire it.

The two leaders and their supporters were questioned at Deonar police station into the early hours of Wednesday, following which the cross-complaints were registered.

"Rakesh Jadhav, an NCP worker and a Malik supporter had filed a complaint against nine persons including Sanjay Patil, of whom two persons—Abdul Kalam Almuddin(28), Mohmad Sufiyan Salim Qureshi (28), both supporters of Patil have been arrested, while others are yet to be held. On the other hand, Shanu Ansari, a Patil supporter had filed a complaint against 17 persons, including Nawab Malik of whom only one Mohamad Israr Yasin Maniyar (42) has been arrested,"said Dattatray Shinde, Senior Police Inspector of Deonar Police Station.

On Wednesday, NCP's city president Sachin Ahir apprised the party's state president Sunil Tatkare about the incident.

"We condemn the incident and will take necessary action against those found guilty. I have presented a report of the ruckus to Tatkare, who also spoke to both the leaders over the phone," Ahir said.
