As MSEDCL is set to privatise power distribution and bill collection in Mumbra, NCP senior leader Jitendra Awhad warned of a public stir against it. He said that he will not let any private power distribution company set foot in Mumbra, Kalwa, Diva and other surrounding areas.

Tired of the pending electricity bill dues from Mumbra and adjacent areas, the MSECL (Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Limited) took the decision to outsource the bill collection. As such, they have floated a tender and soon will finalise the third party for bill recovery.

The Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), however, has taken an offensive posture against this decision of MSEDCL. They have termed this as the government's move to dump its responsibility on citizens. "This would lead to inflated bills which is evident in Mumbai and Bhiwandi where there are private power distributors," said Awhad.

He said that after power distribution was given to Adani in Mumbai and Torrent company in Bhiwandi, people in these areas have seen hiked electricity bills. "Even if there is no increase in the power tariff, there is an increase in meter reading due to new electric meters which can be manipulated," alleged Awhad.

He alleged that MSEDCL is using the excuse of financial losses to privatise power distribution in Mumbra-Kalwa-Diva-Padle-Shil-Daighar area. "They should keep a tight control on their transformers and bring down the cases of power thefts. If needed, we will help them hunt down the power thieves," he said.

Ahwad said that privatising power distribution and bill collection is not the answer to the problem. "We will not let private companies set foot in Mumbra-Kalwa and such areas. And if forced, then we will shut down MSEDCL offices," threatened Awhad. He asked the administration to have a dialogue with the residents in the next 15 days to find an amicable solution to the problem.
