While lieutenant commander Abhilash Tomy left for a solo, non-stop, six-month-long circumnavigation of the world as a part of an Indian Navy mission on Thursday, his father VC Tomy (navy, retired) advised him to note down details of events daily so he can write a book after returning.

“I only advised my son not to be overconfident in the water and make a note of all events daily during the journey so that he can write a book,” his father said.

The journey, Sagar Parikrama–II, which will cover more than 45,000km, was flagged off from the Gateway of India around 12.30pm on Thursday by vice-admiral Shekhar Sinha, flag officer commander-in-chief of the western naval command.

During the journey, Tomy will not take help from any of the ports that fall along the way. “Tomy is expected to sail the yacht INSV Mhadei for around six months and is likely to return to Mumbai by April-May,” a navy official said.

“To prepare for the mission, I have been training under famed commander Dilip Donde. If I need any advice during the journey, I will contact him via the internet,” Tomy said.

Donde was part of the same voyage around the world in 2009 on the same yacht, INSV Mhadei. During his journey, he went through Australia, New Zealand, Cape Horn and Cape of Good Hope, and finally ended in the Maximum City.

To reclaim India’s glorious maritime history, vice admiral Manohar Awati, who retired as a commander-in-chief of the western naval command, had proposed a solo circumnavigation of the globe by boat. The navy had accepted the proposal and the defence ministry had granted permission in 2006.
