Navi Mumbai's open spaces a dumping ground for bodies

Sunday, 29 December 2013 - 12:24pm IST | Place: Vashi | Agency: DNA

A body of an unidentified woman, aged between 25 and 30 years, was found in a nullah in Vashi sector 17, along the Palm Beach Road on Friday. A few locals spotted the body floating in the nullah, behind Gokul dairy, around 6.30pm, and promptly informed the police.

“We’re not sure if the woman was murdered or if she committed suicide. No injury marks have been found on the body, either. No one from the neighbouring areas has come forward to identify the body and we have not recovered any identity proof with it,” said Ramesh More, assistant police inspector from Vashi police station.

“The deceased was wearing a coffee-coloured salwar kurta with golden print on it. Her clothes say she possibly belonged to a lower middle class family,” More said.

The police have sent the body to NMMC hospital in Vashi for postmortem and are awaiting the reports. “We’ll get to know the time of her death once we get the report. For now, we have registered a case of accidental death,” he said.

This incident of a body being found in a nullah, however, is not an isolated one. Corpses have been found in nullahs, creeks or isolated spots in the city. Bodies were also found at various places and some of these cases are yet to be solved by the police.

While some victims were residents of Navi Mumbai, others were from neighbouring Mumbai and other peripheral areas. Some other victims remained unidentified.

Fateh Singh Patil, additional commissioner of police said, “It’s true that a few bodies were found in the isolated spots of the city this year. A majority of them were identified and we also solved some cases if the victims were murdered. But we don’t believe that people are murdered elsewhere and the bodies are dumped here, as many organisations claim now.”
