The biggest festival of the year is here. And, people are gearing up to look their best, decorate their homes grandly, most importantly have the brightness of different lights cascading their homes. All this takes considerable trips to shops and markets and that is what everyone is busy doing.

Nandini Saha, a Panvel resident and a mall freak, did her Diwali shopping from Inorbit and Center One. Although the former suited her needs in a better way, she says, “Shoppers Stop is my favourite whether they have discounts or not. I have got myself two pairs of jeans and three tops. Since, one cannot do without Indian wear for Diwali, I have also bought a designer saree in maroon with accessories.”

For Nerul’s Deepika Marwah, Inorbit and Central are favourite destinations for shopping. As she is busy with exams, she plans to shop soon as exams get over. “I know what exactly I want so it won’t take much time. I will buy myself an Anarkali in a bright colour, but without heavy work or embroidery,” she says. She adds gifts for friends and family include chocolates and sweets.

For some, it is impossible to think of Diwali without crackers. Neela Varahan, a Vashi resident, said her family is the first in the society to burst crackers at 4am.

“We do not buy a lot of stuff, but the usual 1,000-wala red fort crackers, flower pots and big sparklers. The red-fort crackers are my son’s favourite and our budget is Rs1,000.”

Koparkhairane resident Naveen Surve says, “My brother got a good job just a few days back and since crackers are a favourite we will buying a huge amount this time. Every year there are many new varieties, but as a mutual agreement between us we go for the less noisy and more colourful ones.”

People are also looking for home decor shops that have good offers on curtains, upholstery, bed linen, wall coverings, carpets and rugs to beautify their homes.

Sanpada resident, Shanta Sawant has not been able to do a complete renovation of her home and has chosen to buy a few decor items to add more colour at 10% discount.

“I usually invite all my friends on Diwali and thus I thought the living room should be more attractive. I have bought a pair of cream-coloured silk curtains with red floral design and go well with our furniture. Also, I have bought two pairs of covers for my sofa cushions in purple and white colour with embossed geometric pattern. I immediately placed everything to see how it looks and was happy that it really enhanced the look of my living room.”
