A major disaster was averted on Saturday when an empty suburban local train crashed into a Navi Mumbai Municipal Transport (NMMT) bus headed to Ulwe from Vashi, at an unmanned level crossing near Sanpada. Three passengers in the bus sustained injuries.

As per eyewitnesses and passengers, it was a miraculous escape for the 12 people onboard. The people who escaped with minor injuries were admitted to the D Y Patil Hospital in Navi Mumbai.

The three injured persons have been identified as Sarvesh Thanekar (12), Neelam Tyagi (42) and Mukta Biswas (30). Dr Nitin Yashwante, on-duty doctor at D Y Patil Hospital, said, "All three have sustained minor injuries, and there is nothing major. We will be discharging all of them by Sunday but, prior to that they will undergo x-ray tests to eliminate chances of internal fractures."

The Central Railway (CR) said in a statement, crossing the yard line, where the accident occurred, is unauthorised. The road there has been built by the City and Industrial Development Corporation (CIDCO) and the Railways has been asking the NMMC and CIDCO to construct a road over bridge (ROB) for quite a few years now.

The statement by the CR further added that a preliminary inquiry has been ordered into the accident. It also said that rail traffic was not affected by the accident since the train was close to the yard.

According to an NMMT official, "Usually, every time a train goes past the level crossing, a person from the train gets off in advance to ensure there is no traffic movement but, that did not happen this time. The driver of the NMMT bus thought the train was not moving, and hence he drove on. We are waiting for the police to investigate thoroughly."

Even earlier, several accidents at unmanned level crossings have been reported from across the nation. Every year hundreds lose their lives. The Railway Ministry had previously claimed that all unmanned level crossings in the country will be eliminated by March 2020.
