While the state government is yet to make it mandatory for vehicles to replace their normal registration number plates with the high-security registration number plate (HSRNP), the deputy regional transport office (RTO) in Vashi claims that a few private companies are selling duplicate HSRNPs. Dy RTO has asked motorists to avoid buying such number plates, since the state government has not awarded tenders to any company to supply them.

A Supreme Court order has made it mandatory for all state governments to issue new registration numbers only in HSRNPs to prevent vehicle theft to a large extent. At a time when other states have adopted this new system, the Maharashtra government has not even floated a tender to chose a private party to supply the HSRNPs. “Strict measures will be taken against those selling these in the market,” said Sanjay Dhaygude, Dy RTO Vashi.

The HSRNP is believed to be tamper-proof and it ensures the safety of the vehicles. “The high-security number plates will have safety features like a non-removable snap lock, which will protect them from theft, a chromium-base Ashok Chakra hologram, ‘INDIA’ embossed on them, a seven-digit unique laser code and a self-destructive windshield sticker,” said Dhaygude.

However, Dhaygude did not confirm when the RTO will start distributing the new HSRNPs to motorists. “The decision will be taken by the transport commissioner. But they will soon float tender to finalise the company to provide these number plates,” said Dhaygude.

According to Dhaygude, some private companies are trying to benefit from this and are selling such number plates by taking motorists into confidence saying they would be fined or their vehicles would be stolen otherwise. “Motorists need not to worry at the moment. They will soon get these plates from a government-approved agency,” said Dhaygude.“Once the rule is implemented, old vehicles will also be converted with HSRNPs phase-wise,” concluded Dhaygude.
