St Augustine High School, Nerul, under-17 girls football team emerged as the runner up in the state-level (inter-division) Subrato Cup football tournament that concluded in Yavatmal in Amrawati district last week.
Eight divisions from the state participated in the tournament and St Augustine represented the Mumbai division.
Pune division won the Football Cup but St Augustine proved its mettle in the final match.
“Initially, the audience was supporting the Pune team from Ahmednagar, but after 15 minutes into the game, supporters started cheering our team,” said Hemant Zende, coach of St Augustine team.
The first goal of the match was scored by Pune division.
But, St Augustine made a comeback the very next minute and Akanksha Kandalkar scored a goal. Till the end of the match, the score remained unchanged. “Twice, the ball touched the cross bar and our team missed the opportunities in the match,” said Zende.
In the knock out, St Augustine defeated Amrawati division by 1-0 and in the semi-final, they defeated the Latur division by 3-0.
