In all, six major consortia have shown interest in carrying out the electrical and mechanical work of the first phase of Navi Mumbai Metro, being implemented by the City and Industrial Development Corporation (Cidco). These works include laying of track, signalling, telecommunication, automatic fare and rolling stock (coaches) for which the Cidco had invited tenders.

“We have received expression of interest from nine major companies/consortia. Of these, we might be shortlisting six for final qualification and the contract will be awarded to only one of them. The contract will include carrying out of both mechanical as well as electrical works,” Cidco superintending engineer (metro), VC Kamble said.

The companies which are likely to be shortlisted are the joint venture of Hyundai Rotem, Balfour Beatty and Nippon, the consortium of Siemens AG and Siemens India, L&T Consortium, Ansaldo STS, ALSTOM and Bombardier Transportation.

“The most important criteria which we have put up before the companies bidding for the work is that the company/consortium should have done metro related work of at least 10 km and the same should have been operational for minimum two years.

Based on this, we will be opening the bids on September 30. On the basis of the pre-qualification, technical and financial bids, the contract will be awarded to the most deserving company/consortium,” Kamble said.

Earlier, Kamble had stated that the first train will start rolling out of the city only by 2016 and not March 2015 as was declared earlier.

“We have completed almost 50 per cent of the civil work of the first phase of metro line between Belapur and Pendhar,” he had said, adding, that for all the above works, Cidco will be allotting the contract to only one firm unlike the civil works wherein six contractors shared the responsibility. The estimated cost of these technical works is Rs1,020 crore and the corporation’s aim is to complete the process by January 2014.

Currently, the first phase of the work, to lay 11.10 km metro line between Belapur-Kharghar-Taloja- Pendhar, is on. The line will have 11 stations and the estimated cost to be incurred by the planning agency in phase I will be Rs1,985 crore. Phase II of the metro work will be taken up between MIDC Taloja-Kalamboli-Khandeshwar, which is proposed to be extended up to Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA). The work to link Pendhar-Taloja will form the third stage of phase I work.
