Sikhs all over the city will commemorate the two sons of Guru Gobind Singh today as they valiantly gave their lives to uphold their faith. Gurudwaras across satellite city will pay respect to the martyrs. The Vashi gurudwara will have a kavi sammelan wherein poets will recite poems as a tribute to the sacrifices of the brave souls.

Guru Gobind Singh’s youngest sons Baba Jorawar Singh and Baba Fateh Singh, were only nine and six year-olds when Wazir Khan, Mughal leader of Sirhind town of Punjab ordered that they be sealed alive by having walls erected around them. This was because they refused to embrace Islam even after being sweet talked, warned and threatened. They were held imprisoned in a freezing tower along with their grandmother who also breathed her last when she heard the news of her grandsons’ death.

Baba Ajit Singh and Baba Jujhar Singh were the eldest sons, aged 18 and 14 respectively when they went forth to fight the mighty Mughal army of one lakh soldiers at Chamkaur in Punjab. They also attained shaheedi on December 21. The pairs known as chotte shahibzade and vadda shahibzade are remembered by all members of the community on these days.

“The young martyrs are highly respected in the community for steadfastly upholding the faith’s values and for charging at the battlefield at such a tender age to fight the enemy and save our land. In tribute to them, a kavi sammelan is being organised for which we have called poets from the city as well as Punjab to recite songs in praise of the sons. Poets Gurdial Singh Nimar, Swinder Singh Bhagowalia and Racchpal Singh Pal will be coming from Punjab while Charan Singh Dardi and Amarjeet Kaur are from Navi Mumbai,” said Balwant Singh Seera, secretary of Vashi gurudwara.

“The religious heads will explain the importance of this day to the people who gather at the gurudwara by narrating the incidents when the young soldiers departed,” said Tarsem Singh, vice president of Nerul gurudwara.

Ranjit Singh Dhillon, general secretary of CBD-Belapur gurudwara said, “The akhand paath is also read on this day. Keertans will be rendered by the raagis (musicians) in praise of the duo for their unswerving belief in the faith and refusal to submit to suppression by foreign rulers.”
