The Navi Mumbai police who is probing high profile cyber attack cases like Ransomware attack faced by Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (JNPT) and Reliance Jio’s customer data breach, the police themselves are becoming the victim of cyber criminals and it has become a challenge for them to keep their website secure. The official website of the Navi Mumbai police has been hacked once again with in two weeks by the same Turkish hacker on Friday. DNA had first reported about the website being hacked by Turkish hacker on July 1.

As per the police, on Friday night, when they were trying to upload some updates on their official website www.navimumbaipolice.gov.in, they saw that it was hacked once again within two weeks. The website had stopped functioning. 

The matter was immediately reported to senior officers and the issue was resolved with the help of cyber experts. The police said, the hacker had allegedly defaced the home page of the website with images like people holding Turkish flags, people carrying out march holding placards and flags and another photo of soldiers with cannon along with some message written in Turkish language. It has been revealed during the investigation that the hacker was the same who had hacked the website on July 1 when the page displayed the message: “This website has been hacked by Network 44”

While the motive of the hacking is still not clear it has been revealed during the investigation that the hacker is based in Turkey and he is doing it on Friday only.

Taking the cognisance of the matter, the Joint Commissioner of Police Prashant Burde  had called a meeting with all the officers and security audit was passed on Saturday.

“The hacker could not tamper with any data nor he could destroy it but he just defaced it. We have already registered a case against the hacker in CBD belapur police station and we have written to computer emergency response team (CERT) to get the details of this IP address and block it. The reason why this all is happening is because the website needed an upgrade on which the work is in progress but it will take some more time, Said Tushar Doshi, Deputy Commissioner of Police(crime) Navi Mumbai police. The bugs in the website would be fixed soon,” he added. The Police have already registered a case against the hacker when the website was hacked two weeks ago.

Govt site attacked

The hackers had allegedly defaced the home page of the website with images like people holding Turkish flags, carrying out march and another photo of soldiers with a cannon, along with some message in Turkish language. 

On July 1 the website was hacked by the same hacker and the page had displayed: “This website has been hacked by Network 44”.
