Navi Mumbai residents have planned a signature campaign against the decision of the general body of Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) to pass no-confidence motion against Civic Chief Tukaram Mundhe.

Sources said there was anger among the residents of the satellite city as they were aware that politicians were trying to send back an honest officer for their vested interests. The residents have expressed hope that Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis will help in the matter. On Wednesday, a residents' delegation met the Police Commissioner to seek permission for organising the signature campaign.

Mundhe had decided to go ahead with a demolition drive against illegal structures, apparently miffing a lot of corporators, who were left with no other option but to bring in a no-confidence motion against him. Right To Information (RTI) activist Rajeev Mishra, on whose PIL the Bombay High Court had directed City and Industrial Development Corporation (CIDCO), Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) and Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation (MIDC) to demolish 99 illegal buildings in Digha, said, "Majority of the corporators fear they will lose their seats. navi Mumbai residents should come forward to save an honest officer.

"He has done everything as per law. Just not giving enough time to politicians can not be a reason to bring a no-confidence motion against somebody," Mishra added.

Meanwhile, Mayor Sudhakar Sonawane demanded that the State Government should immediately recall Mundhe, as he has lost his right to head the civic body. He said, the no-confidence motion was passed by over 100 members in the House. "Even 60 members' consent was enough to send him back. I hope the Chief Minister will take a decision," he said.

Meanwhile, Mundhe reportedly submitted a report on the work he has done in the last five months to the Urban Development Department, which comes under the CM.

Residents believe that government's decision will be based on the merit of general body decision no confidence motion as Mundhe has done nothing wrong.
