Following the huge losses it is suffering due to lack of passengers, the Navi Mumbai Municipal Transport (NMMT) has decided to shut down six bus routes from September 30.

Most of these routes are the long distance ones and were started by the transport arm of Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) following demand from the commuters.

“We had started the routes thinking that it will benefit the commuters who otherwise have to face lot of difficulties while commuting between satellite city and places such as Thane, Badlapur, Khopoli and Mulund. However, we are forced to shut down these services due to the poor response from people,” an NMMT official said not wishing to be named.

Of the above services, route number 24 (New Panvel (E) to Thane) was started by NMMT on April 1 this year, after residents of New Panvel node extensively followed up with the officials. “We were happy and relieved after the bus service was started as it was helpful to those wishing to travel to Thane, particularly on Sundays when the Central Railway has mega blocks as part of their maintenance exercise,” a resident of sector 13, New Panvel, said.

He added that when they learned that the NMMT was contemplating to shut down the service, they called up the officials and convinced them to not shut the service between New Panvel (E) to Belapur. “Following the request from the residents, we decided to continue the services till Belapur and shut down the same till Thane,” the NMMT official added.

The route of the buses between New Panvel (E) and Belapur is Panvel Railway Station (E)-Abyudaya Bank-Kali Mata Mandir-Shiva Complex-Adai Circle-Dharan Talao-Khandeshwar Flyover-Khanda Colony-Khanda Village-Kalmaboli-Belapur.

Apart from the above service, the other routes which have been shut down include route number 26 (Kharghar to Thane), 29 (CBD-Belapur to Thane), 47 (CBD-Belapur to Badlapur), 58 (Koparkhairane to Khopoli) and 112 (Nerul sectors 46, 48 to Mulund (W) bus station).
