Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) will soon be recruiting additional staff in its health department. The recruitment will be done by publishing advertisements in local newspapers for the next two months.

According to a senior NMMC official, the staff to be recruited by the civic body includes medical officers, nurses, ward boys and others.

“The civic health department had been facing acute staff shortage for the past several months and it had been demanding recruitment of the same. We had tabled a proposal before NMMC general body which cleared the proposal and asked the administration to recruit the staff at the earliest so that they can be accommodated into the health department and posted at various hospitals,” the official added.

When his attention was drawn towards the unavailability of proper healthcare for the patients, particularly when there is spurt in cases of dengue and malaria, the official said he was aware of the fact and this is probably the reason behind the recruitment process being expedited. However, he refused to divulge details in regards to how many personnel will be recruited.

Meanwhile, the official said that the contracts of those employees which are due for renewal will be done at the earliest and appealed them to not panic.

This assumes importance since some people in the nursing staff, who are appointed on contract basis, had approached Thane guardian minister Ganesh Naik during his Janata Darbar on Thursday, stating that around 316 staff members have been removed from the services and requested his intervention so that they are re-instated. Reacting to this, the official said that they are not removed from the services but their contracts are due for renewal and will be done soon.
