The education department of Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) is all set to start two technical subjects from the next academic session for classes VIII to X.

The civic education department has received permission from the Maharashtra State Board of Technical Education (MSBTE) to include these technical subjects in the syllabus of secondary classes.

Over 6,000 students studying in the municipal schools are likely to benefit from the development as they will get technical education free of cost in their elementary education set-up. The two subjects which will be introduced are electronics and electrical.

Sudhakar Sonawane, chairman, education board of NMMC confirmed the development and said, “Now, students studying in civic schools will have an option to study technical subjects as this will secure their future.”

The two new technical papers will be made available to students from the next academic session. “The NMMC is capable of teaching these two papers in its schools as the civic body has the required infrastructure,” said Sonawane, adding, “We just needed permission from the MSBTE.”

According to Sonawane, the NMMC has 11 secondary schools and over 6,000 students are enrolled in them. “Most of the students enrolled in civic schools are from financially weak families and these two subjects will make them capable of earning while learning after passing out from school secondary certificate,” said Sonawane. The technical paper will be optional and it is up to the students to chose to study them.

Specialist teachers will be required for the subjects and the education department will work on it.

“We have time and we will work on it.” said Sonawane.

Santosh Mhatre, a student of civic school said, “This will benefit us, as earlier we could make such choices only after clearing SSC. We had to find ITI colleges to study such subjects.”
