In a bid to streamline the administration and check monopoly of certain officials, Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) will be transferring officials who have been working in the same department for more than five years, a civic official has revealed.

Accordingly, a list of officials who have not been transferred from “lucrative” departments for the last six to eight years is being prepared and necessary action will be taken soon. Similarly, the transfer of three ward officers, too, is expected.

As per the government rules, employees are transferred every three years, however, some officials have “managed” to get themselves posted in a particular department despite completion of their tenure.

The local body tax (LBT), earlier cess and the engineering department are the most-sought-after departments for posting in the municipal corporation.

However, after Abasaheb Jarhad took over as the municipal commissioner, he has cracked the whip against errant officials and tried to streamline the administration to a great extent.

The process for transfers of officials posted in the same department even after the tenure was over is part of the cleansing activity undertaken by the civic chief.

According to sources, there has been an increasing demand for appointing ward officers on deputation with the municipal corporation.

“The present ward officers in eight wards of the satellite city are either promoted from clerical grades or have been given additional charge. As a result, they are susceptible to pressure and in most cases they are also yielding to such pressures,” an official said, on the condition of anonymity.

“There is a need for ward officers who will have strong administrative acumen,” the official added.
Meanwhile, the transfers of ward officers have been pending for quite some time now. First it was because of the by-polls and then since there was no full-time commissioner in the civic body.

But things seem to have been sorted out and transfers of ward officers too may take place soon.

There was also a sense of resentment among other officials who were regularly transferred from one department to the other on expiry of their tenure.

“Law should be same for all. If we are transferred regularly, then why is it that some officials in the cess department continue to hold office for more than five years?” asked a civic official.
