Even as some municipal corporations in Maharashtra are blaming it on the local body tax (LBT) for dip in revenue in the last financial year, Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) has garnered revenues exceeding their targets.

The cess department had collected Rs 420.64 crore in the last fiscal, whereas on March 31, 2014, the local body tax department (earlier cess; LBT was introduced in NMMC area from April 1, 2013) was able to collect Rs 737.48 crore, which is Rs 316.84 crore more than the financial year 2012-13.

The property tax department, which is another major source of revenue for the municipal corporation, clocked a target of Rs 373.28 crore on March 31, 2014, as against Rs 321 crore the previous fiscal.

The other sources of revenue, which include town planning development fee, water bills, license department, advertisements, encroachment, road digging charges together amounted to Rs 1,299.58 crore as against Rs 1229.78 crore in 2012-13.

Municipal commissioner, Abasaheb Jarhad, had directed department heads to clear bills of the works done before March 31 this year. Considering the work pressure during the month of March, the civic chief has directed officials to spend the money equally during the next financial year.

Jarhad has also appealed to the business community to clear their LBT dues, if any, at the earliest. According to an official, "In the month of March, we carry out the work of issuing notices to defaulters. The election duty work has not impacted the functioning at civic body and its revenue collection in March since we have been following up for revenue collection on a regular basis throughout the year."
