A 30-year-old man, who allegedly tried to murder his wife by setting her ablaze, was arrested on Tuesday.

According to the police, Arif alias Harish Fansopkar, a resident of Namdeo Nagar, Digha, set his wife on fire after pouring kerosene on her. Merry, 30, suffered 40% burns and is now recuperating in a hospital in Thane.

“The couple tied the knot a couple of years ago, but did not have a smooth married life. The accused suspected that his wife had an extra-marital affair which led to frequent quarrels between them,” said a police officer from Rabale MIDC police station.

On Tuesday, Arif had a fight with his wife and he assaulted her. “In a fit of rage he poured kerosene on her and set her ablaze. As the victim yelled for help, some neighbours came forward and rushed her to the hospital. Following a case registered by the victim’s relatives, we arrested the accused on Tuesday evening,” he said.
