The civic administration is busy readying itself for the municipal elections and simultaneously eagerly waiting for the lottery for wards, which is likely to take place in the next eight to 10 days. Presently, the process of ward formation for Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) elections is underway and most of the work related to this is almost over.

The term of the present House will be over on May 8 and the new House is to be constituted before this. The civic elections are likely to be held by March end or April first week. The number of wards in NMMC area has gone up from 89 to 111 due to the rise in population. Currently, the population of Navi Mumbai has crossed 12 lakh and the number of voters is around 8 lakh.

Earlier, the civic body had completed the procedure for ward formation based on the panel system of voting. However, later the state government scrapped the system and elections will now be held ward wise. During the last civic election in 2010, the lottery for wards was drawn by January end. This time, the administration is hopeful of completing the process of lottery by then.

"The process had to be done twice, first for panel system and then after that system was scrapped for conventional ward-wise voting. We have almost completed everything and soon the process to identify voting centres too will begin," said a civic official.

There will be a round of suggestions and objections which is too be followed by lottery. Sitting corporators are keeping their fingers crossed as it is not known which way the ward will go. Of the total number of seats, 50% are reserved for woman candidates. For workers of political parties and contestants only after ward formation and lottery the correct picture will emerge.

Meanwhile, sitting corporators and candidates who are planning to contest the elections are eagerly awaiting the lottery for wards. "The real picture will be clear only after the lottery. We are waiting for it so that ground level preparations can begin," said Vaibhav Gaikwad, NCP corporator.

Another aspirant said, "The political situation in Navi Mumbai has changed a lot in the last few months. As a result, there are several candidates who are aspiring to contest elections this time. Once the lottery of draw is out, it will be easy for us to start our preparations and reach out to the people."

Veteran Shiv Sena corporator Vitthal More opined, "Corporator elections are one of the toughest to win since people know the candidate personally. Once the lottery is out, we will be able to know the exact situation."
