Navi Mumbai: Fr Agnel under-19 basketball team leaves for state championship

The under-19 basketball boys team of Fr Agnel, Vashi, left for Chandrapur in Nagpur on Wednesday to play the state basketball championship starting today. The boys’ basketball team emerged winners in the Mumbai division tournament held at Fr Agnel Sports Complex in Vashi.

The Fr Agnel team got walked over in the pre-quarter final of Mumbai division tournament where eight teams participated. In the semi-final, Agnelites defeated Sulochana Devi Singhania School, Thane, by 45-12. “Our boys played wonderfully and they won the semi-final with ease,” said Ravi Nair, sport head of Fr Agenl School.

In the final, Khalsa College, Thane, gave a tough competition to Fr Agnel in the first half and the score was 37-20 by the end of first half. The second half was dominated by Fr Agnel which defeated Khalsa College by 65-37. Tanmay Mali was the top scorer with 27 points followed by Rohan Jagtap with 26 points while Simon Paul was top scorer with 14 points from Khalsa College.

Mali said that they had better coordination in the second half of the match. “In the first half, we lacked a little coordination but in the second half we focused more on it. We played as a team and won the match with a good margin,” said Mali. He added that they have worked very hard and will surely win the state championship.

The team left for Chandrapur to participate in the state championship tournament which will be concluding on October 28. “Our players have done excellent home work and they will give their best in the state championship,” said Nair.
