The schools’ practice of ditching weak student and asking them to appear privately in board exams to secure 100% results put many students under depression.

Later, these students need a proper counselling so that the impact of being in isolation during the examination can be reduced. Experts believe that the role of parents becomes therefore important as they can guide their children to achieve maximum even in this condition, Salma Prabhu, an education counsellor, who has been guiding and counselling people for more than 15 years, believes that there is no difference whether the student is appearing as schools’ bonafide candidate or privately. “All the students will appear in the exam on the same day and their result will also come on the same day,” says Prabhu. She says the role of parents increases as they should standby their children.

According to Prabhu, on many occasions, the reaction of parent is very important. “Parents start shouting at their children when they come to know about the school’s decision asking their children to appear the exam privately. This is not good for the child as he/she does not even get support at their homes,” explains Prabhu.

Prabhu says that parents can convert this situation in an opportunity. “Parents can themselves monitor their children’s studies and guide them properly,” says Prabhu.

Some times, under tremendous pressure, students go into depression which should be avoided by the parents. “I feel parents need counselling. They force their views and wishes on children which increases the chance of students developing depression-like situation,” said Prabhu.

Counselling becomes very important for children who are facing depression-like situation, otherwise burnout situation can arise. If parents find their child’s behaviour a slightly different and which is not as per their age and environment, they should immediately approach a counsellor.

“If any child has lost 5kg weight in a small period, not eating properly, does not look happy and spending time alone, this may be a wake up call for parent,” said Prabhu, adding, “Parents do not leave their children alone in this condition. The child might take drastic step as the child starts believing that nobody likes including his parents.”

Urmi Popat Thakkar, another education counsellor, also believes that the role of parents increases in this condition. “For the last few years, it has been noticed that some schools strategically bar weak students from registering for the board examination as school’s bonafide students. This all has been done to ensure that the school must secure cent result in board exam,” she says.

According to Thakkar, the number of such schools have been dropped drastically in recent years but the practice is still reported. This has happened because of schools adopting international board.

Thakkar says there has not been much affect of the decision on children but parents land in depression as they make it a social status issue.

“In this condition, parents should support their children and go for a counselling,” says Thakkar.

She adds that every child is different and so their problems are different. “Even students are intelligent but could but perform well in the examination. Parents can only understand about their children,” said Thakkar, adding, “They should try to build the basic of their children before reaching to class X. So that such situations do not arise.”

Prabhu also advocates that home’s environment is equally important. “The environment should be calm and parents should maintain the decorum while using any particular language,” says Prabhu. She says an instrumental music can be helpful for children in this condition.
