It is a classic case of a white-collar executive turning to a life of crime. Police in Navi Mumbai's Vashi have arrested a 35-year-old former IT executive for chain snatching and car robbery. Police have said the man had quit his high-paying job and turned to crime to support his cash-guzzling lifestyle, which included a drug habit.

The man, whom police identified as Sumit Sengupta, had quit his job at a leading IT company, where was a vice president, for personal reasons. The cops said he was under a lot of stress due to 'family problems', Times of India reported.

Sengupta's wife had reportedly filed a cruelty complaint against him in 2015 in Vashi. He told police that he had studied engineering at a Mumbai college and was working in Pune. However, it turned out he had quit his job, which paid about Rs 2.5 lakh per month.

Police also claimed his was a drug addict, and that he turned to crime to support his lifestyle and drug habit.

Sengupta was arrested with his accomplice, 25-year-old Nitin Agarwal, on December 13, reports said. Cops had gotten on their trail after they had snatched a woman's gold chain in Vashi from a car before driving off on December 12. The police scanned CCTV footage from the area and got a clear picture of Sengupta's face, after which he was identified by local informers.

It turned out the car that Sengupta and Agarwal used to commit this crime had itself been stolen. Sengupta had stolen the car from outside the Fortis Hospital in Vashi on December 9, Times of India reported. He had held a metal object to the car owner's head and pretended that it was a gun. He threatened to shoot the man, forced him out of the car and stole it.

Police have found that an unrelated case of theft had already been filed against Sengupta in 2017. They are now trying to find out if there are any other police stations in the region where cases may have been filed against him.
