Navi Mumbai police have detained more than 100 beggars including around 30 children from various parts of the city on Tuesday. While the adults were later booked under sections 5 and 10 of Bombay Prevention of Begging Act, 1959, the minors were sent to a remand home after they were produced before the court.

An RTI query filed by an NGO, Conscious Citizen Forum, revealed that the police have not taken any action under the Bombay Prevention of Begging Act, 1959 in last 10 years. State home minister RR Patil recently wrote to Navi Mumbai police commissioner AK Sharma asking to be serious about the menace caused by these beggars. dna carried that story on October 23.

“We received an order from the DCP office to detain and book the beggars roaming on the city roads and we picked them up from various locations in the city. We detained around 45 beggars including 15 to 20 children from our area,” said a police officer from Vashi police station.

Sources from the police commissioner’s office told dna that the police detained and booked 26 beggars from the APMC area, 18 from Turbhe, and 9 from Nerul on Tuesday.

Purushattam Karad, deputy commissioner of police zone I however, said that this was not the first time they were initiating action under the Bombay Prevention of Begging Act, 1959, this year. “We took action under this act earlier as well. The number of the beggars in Navi Mumbai is increasing day by day and they are creating nuisance in the city. We directed our police stations to take action against them and this drive is being conducted across the city,” he said.

“The beggars were produced before the court on Tuesday noon and they will be sent to beggars’ home in Mumbai. We are however not sure, for how many days this drive will be continued in the city,” another police officer from APMC police station said.

Vijay Patil, deputy commissioner of police of zone II said, “We have also directed our police station to be serious about the issue and detain the beggars, but I don’t know how many beggars have been detained so far. We will take all possible action to reduce of menace of beggars in the satellite city.”
