The anti-corruption bureau (Thane unit) arrested a police official from Navi Mumbai while taking ransom from hotel cum bar authorities in Belapur, on Tuesday night.
Gurunath Rupsingh Rathod, 45, head constable with the security branch of Navi Mumbai special branch demanded Rs60,000 from the mangers of Shashwat lodge and Nightingale bar, sector 15.
“Rathod reportedly told the mangers that he needed Rs50,000 for his senior and another Rs10,000 for himself by Tuesday night,” said AK Sapkal, police inspector of anti-corruption bureau.
“The proprietor of the lodge, Ganesh Moodvidry alias Shetty informed us about it and we laid a trap to nab Rathod. Our officials sat at the bar as customers when Rathod came in and got hold him while accepting the cash,” Sapkal said.
“We are still investigating if the accused was really collecting the money for his senior and if he committed similar crimes earlier as well,” another official said.
Ganesh Moodvidry, the proprietor of the lodge said, “This was not for the first time that I received such call from the police officials. Every month I have to pay around Rs1 lakh to different officers. So, I informed the anti-corruption bureau.”
