Hardly a fortnight ago, most schools in the satellite city were celebrating their annual day functions on a grand and spectacular scale.

From tiny tots to senior sections, students in colourful dresses set the stage on fire. At some points, the children’s performance were seemed to be at par with that of mature artistes.

However, annual day functions at few schools are becoming a costly affair, with most schools increasing their dimensions. Every year, schools come up with different themes and a huge sum is spent on stage and management of the event. Some schools manage the event by themselves, while others hire professional event management firms to execute it, so that there are no mismanagement.

For instance, Airoli’s Euro School has hired an event management firm to execute seven days’ grand annual functions. “Around 2,000 children will participate in the function, which will take place at three venues,” says Gita Agarwal, vice-principal of Euro School.

She adds the budget of the grand function is likely to run into lakhs. However, she refused to give amount that will be spent. “The school will bear the cost of the function and all the arrangements will be carried out by the firm. This will not affect the school’s functioning at all,” adds Agarwal.

The annual day function will be held in two phases – the first phase will take place between January 30 and February 2 and the second between February 7 and 9.

Annual day is when students showcase their talent with great enthusiasm. Kalpana Dwivedi, principal of St Joseph’s High School, Panvel, says, “This is the time when junior section children, especially Montessori students, get a chance to overcome their stage fear.” She adds the school conducts its annual day function only for the Montessori children below five years.

Nerul-based SBOA Public School also organised their annual day function and 1,000 children participated. “Students were enthusiastic to celebrate. So, they prepared in advance,” says Soubhagyalaxmi, a senior faculty at the school.

Last month, Fr Agnel Multipurpose School and Junior College in Vashi celebrated its 31st annual day function on a grand scale.

More than 3,000 children of the school participated in a Broadway musical programme, Annie. It was based on the story of an orphan girl.

The stage was huge enough to fit a car. Each part of the story had different attire for the 3,000 kids who participated.
