Navi Mumbai: Alphonso mangoes hit APMC market, residents elated

Alphonso mangoes that are considered to be among the best in terms of sweetness, richness and flavour, entered the APMC market on January 6. The selling price of five to six dozen mangoes is approximately Rs7,000 to 8,000.

As soon as mangoes enter the market, they are sold to the merchants by conducting auctions, every year. This year, one of the merchants purchased three boxes of these scrumptious mangoes directly from the farmer where each box got sold at almost Rs6,000. Each box consists of almost five dozen mangoes. APMC imported Alphonso from Devgad, Maharashtra and other mangoes like Badami, Glenn, Kesar will soon be available by March 20. Every year, Alphonso comes to the market by December or January. A resident said, “These mangoes are seasonal and I am waiting for them to arrive at a cheaper rate.”

There are many people and merchants who want to buy mangoes which newly arrive in the market. Sanjay Pansare, the director of APMC market said, “Mangoes will be available in the market between February 15 and 20 and it will be available in more quantity by March 20.”

A resident added, “Every year during March or April, we get mangoes at Rs350 and Rs400 per dozen. I am eager to know rates this time.”

Another resident expressed, “Mango is my favourite fruit and I am waiting for varieties of mangoes to come into the market. Price is not a concern.”

Kailash Sonawane, a Vashi resident said, “The size and quality of Alphonso mangoes is better than other, so I prefer to buy it and price does not matter to me.”

Pranjal Chakranarayan, a Seawoods resident said, “I am glad to know that mangoes have entered the APMC market. I can soon enjoy aam ras.
