Teenager Rahul Bipin Kumar's school friends, who were eagerly waiting to meet him before he shifts out of Mumbai, did not get to see him after all. In a freak accident, Rahul who resides in Naval Officers Residential Area (NOFRA) died after a Gulmohar tree fell on him, on Tuesday afternoon. Naval officer Bipin Kumar Manmohan's son, Rahul was out to meet his friends when he reached near Somnath Vatika, a dead Guklmohar tree fell on him causing serious head injuries, said the police.

As the tree fell on Rahul, locals came to rescue him and alerted the police about the incident. The victim was immediately rushed to Ashwini Hospital, who declared him dead on the arrival.

The body was then sent to GT Hospital for the post-mortem.

"The tree fell down as it was a dead tree and had become dry and shallow from inside due to white-ants damaging it. We identified the victim with the help of dependent card which is compulsory to be carried inside the area. The postmortem report of the victim indicates the reason of death as a head injury. We have recorded the statements of eye-witnesses and our further probe is on," said Manoj Sharma, Deputy Commissioner of Police(Zone-I).

Rahul's father Bipan Kumar is a medical surgeon and is posted at Ashwini Hospital in Navy Nagar. The family was busy packing at home, as they were soon to shift after his father was transferred. Rahul's family was in a state of shock, and was not even able to believe that their son, who had left a house to meet his friends died in a tragic incident.

DEADLY NUMBERS

As per the information, city has witnessed around 9500 incidents of trees collapsing between 2010 and 2016. Around 1,275 incidents have taken place damaging the properties.
