Summer time is when cactus flowers bloom and Maharashtra Nature Park in Mahim is all set to host the fourth edition of its summer plant show this weekend. With three categories — Bonsai, Cactus and Bougainville — the exhibition will showcase some of the best plants from the city.

"While most plant exhibitions usually take place during the post monsoon- winter season in India, summer is the period when more hardened and drought-resistant plants bloom into beautiful flowers. Bougainville and Cacti can survive in extreme dry conditions and most of the bonsai are deciduous trees that bloom in summer," said Avinash Kubal, director of Maharashtra Nature Park.

Bonsai-making is a 1,000 year old Japanese art form that requires tremendous skill and patience. The miniature plant is grown within a constricted space and the process requires regular pruning, trimming, grafting and root reduction to give it the natural shape of a tree. The process is long and takes decades and centuries, the minimum period being 10 years.

Various bonsai clubs exist around the city where people follow bonsai-making as a hobby. They will be participating in the exhibition along with various government and private institutions that have sent their plants to the park for display.

A bonsai enthusiast from Chembur Bonsai club, Srikrishna Gadgil says, "You need to give the plant at least one hour of your day to trim, prune and shape it. Even though the process is a bit long drawn, the results are beautiful. Of all my bonsai the one close to my heart is my 13-year-old Ficus lipstick which blooms into red leaves during season."

While almost 800 different plants will be on display, there will also be 28 stalls selling plants. The exhibition will take place from Friday to Sunday between 9am to 7pm.
