The special National Investigation Agency (NIA) court on Wednesday convicted six men, who were arrested for circulating fake currency notes. Judge Prithviraj Chavan observed that the six had conspired against the Indian economy and held them guilty under the new amended section of the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA) act.

All six men had been arrested in 2009 by the anti-terrorism squad. The ATS found counterfeit currency notes of more than Rs3 lakh on them.

Special prosecutor Rohini Salian said, “After the ATS arrested the men with the fake currency, the governor of Reserve Bank of India from Kerala branch realised that the fake currency was recovered from the chest of RBI, Kerala, belonged to similar series of fake currency as to the notes recovered from the accused arrested in Mumbai. Hence the governor of RBI Kerala addressed a letter to the NIA, requesting the agency to take over the investigation.”

To trace the location from where the fake notes had been sent, NIA visited neighbouring countries and collected samples of their currency notes. Salian said, “The agency decided to match the samples with the quality of the fake currency, which were recovered from the accused. To the agency’s surprise, the agency found that the recovered fake currency’s paper as well as colour as well as colour scheme matched with the original currency of Pakistan.

“It was then that the government of india decided to amend the UAPA act, which read that circulating and transporting sophisticated Fake Indian Currency notes in the country amount’s to terrorist act.”
Senior public prosecutor in the case, advocate G G Nagrale said a total 39 of witnesses were examined by the NIA.

The court found that there was enough evidence against the accused and hence convicted all of them.

The sentencing in the case will be done on Thursday.
