Zelubai Wabale, the 65-year-old woman from Babhulgaon in Yeola, who was set ablaze by three persons for allegedly not voting for Shiv Sena died at a civil hospital in Nashik in the wee hours of Monday.

dna had reported the incident on October 18.

The three persons – Ashok Bornare (38), Pandurang Bornare (45) and Nandkishore Bhurak (40) -- all residents of Babhulgaon, who were arrested on Friday, were remanded in magisterial custody on Monday.

Zelubai suffered 65-80% burn injuries and was admitted to the Nashik civil hospital on October 16.

According to Zelubai's first statement, on election day (October 15), the three accused asked her to vote for a particular candidate. That evening, they came to her house to find out who she had voted for. When she told them she had voted for 'watch', they got furious and threatened her. Next day, around 8pm the three set her afire.

Her son and daughter, however, had a different version. They said that Zelubai's saree pallu caught fire when she was trying to remove a container from an LPG gas stove. In her statement to the magistrate, Zelubai had said some 10-12 unidentified persons had set her afire. There were lot of contradictions in her versions and those of her relatives and villagers.

Police investigation found no trace of kerosene on the scene except on three cans. They found burnt pieces of cloth, most probably her saree, from her kitchen to the veranda outside her house.

Nobody had seen these three persons setting her on fire. The three were not related or connected to each other and so on. The police had found no evidence so far to corroborate Zelubai's statement.

On Saturday, Zelubai gave another statement to the police saying no one had burnt her and that her saree caught fire when she was in the kitchen on October 16, 2014.

"Police investigation is not based only on the first or the second statement of the victim. We have to consider, other facts and evidences to proceed with the investigation. I have given 21 points to be investigated. Irrespective of the fact that the victim has expired, investigation will continue. We have to ascertain details like CDR locations of the accused, utilisation of LPG gas and average consumption by the victim, details of kerosene, its smell on the site on that day, electricity cut on that day, chemical analysis report and other related aspects", police superintendent Sanjay Mohit said.
