Areas of Nashik and Ahmednagar have become parched and people have started to loose their patience. Agitation led by Shiv Sena MP Sadashiv Lokhande, people sat in scorching heat trying to attract the attention of authorities on April 28.

While the work of the Nilwande dam, which was started in 1992 has been completed in 2015, however, the left and right bank canals are still incomplete. As a result of which, 182 villages that were to benefit from the dam water have to face a dry season. "If the canal work is completed, 68,000 hectares of land will come under irrigation," said Lokhande, urging government to pay due attention to this issue. He also stated that he had recently met prime minister Narendra Modi regarding the same and informed him of the situation.

Stating that 182 villages in Akole, Sangamner, Rahuri, Rahata, Kopargaon and Sinnar are facing scarcity of water today Lokhande said that the situation would be better had the canal been carrying dam water were completed.

"Instead of completing the work lot of money is being spent on EGS schemes, fodder camps and water tankers. Both ruling and opposition parties seem to be disinterested in the solving problems of the people," stated Nanasaheb Shelke, founder member of the Nilwande dam action committee.
