Curie Manavata Cancer Center from Nashik was chosen for the award among many entries.

Started by renowned Onco surgeon Dr Raj Nagarkar in 2007, Curie Manavata Cancer Center (CMCC) has come to gain an identity as one stop solution for cancer treatment and life beyond cancer. To its distinction CMCC is the first center in Maharashtra to be recognized by NABH and first in North Maharashtra to have facilities such as IMRT machine and PET CT scan. Equipped with departments of Medical Oncology, Surgical Oncology, Radiation oncology, nuclear medicine, clinical research, radiology, physiotherapy, pathology, CMCC offers all treatment modalities under one roof.

CMCC is also the first private hospital in Maharashtra to be affiliated to Maharashtra University of Health Sciences for Post Graduate courses in Oncology.

"As much as it is a medical issue, cancer is also personal and a social issue. While you treat the disease, it is also important to heal the mind and strengthen the social support and for this empathy is required," states Dr Raj Nagarkar.

"We have to build hope in the patient and his/her care taker. Offering the latest medical support under one roof reduces their anxieties and hardships and offering being empathetic helps them believe in their treatment," he says. Nagarkar credits his team for CMCC's success. He says,"It is team work. The complete team has to believe in giving care, understanding the patient's anxieties, suffering and help him deal with the situation," adding:

"This is my passion and I feel there is so much that you can do for a patient who is suffering."

Dr Raj Nagarkar believes that this is a process of curing cancer and helping heal from within. The patient has to come back to the normal life and look forward to life peacefully. For this new department psycho oncology is also being opened at CMCC where the patients will also be helped to cope psychologically.

Stating that two decades ago this was known as the disease of the elderly, Cancer has changed its spectrum and now we see more young patients suffering. However new modalities of treatment and approach to cancer has also improved its success rate. "Awareness and prevention are two factors that we need to work on most", the doctor insists and CMCC also takes many such programmes in colleges, groups, many platforms. The center also runs a foundation that helps patients to lessen their financial burden for treatment.
