Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) president Sharad Pawar attacked prime minister Narendra Modi after the latter criticised Pawar and said he had run way from the Lok Sabha elections for fear of losing and chosen the Rajya Sabha route instead.

Launching the counter-attack during a rally in Ahmadpur, Marathwada, Pawar said, "Modi is not aware about my election record. I have fought 14 elections and not lost a single one so far. So, why would I run away?"

"I am lucky that the PM does not see any leader other than me. He cannot end his day without taking my name. Modi doesn't have any work on hand as PM, and hence, he is travelling across the state and addressing campaign rallies. We have respect for the PM post. ...its decorum should be protected. Modi is devaluing the post by making personal attacks and addressing so many rallies in Maharashtra," said Pawar.

"Modi's speech is full of hatred and attacks on individuals. As a PM, he should speak about development and upcoming projects. By attacking me, he is not gaining anything. Farmers are suffering in state due to his wrong policies. Crops prices have not gone up in the last four months after he took over. If Centre continues with such wrong policies, farmers will continue to suffer."

Modi had hit back at Pawar after he had attacked the BJP saying those who had termed Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj a "looter" were invoking the warrior king to seek votes.

Supriya Sule, NCP leader and MP, said if Modi continued to make personal attacks on Pawar, they would sue him for defamation.

NCP leader Chhagan Bhujbal said backward class people have no scope in BJP. "Late Gopinath Munde was also tortured in the party by its leaders. When Munde passed away, Modi didn't attend his funeral, and now, for the election, he is travelling across the state and addressing 24 campaign rallies. People of Maharashtra are shrewd, they won't get fooled by such false promises and fake love," he added.
