Keeping up his agenda of criticising former chief minister Prithviraj Chavan, Congress leader Narayan Rane on Tuesday blamed Chavan for the Congress' defeat in the recently-held state assembly elections. Rane alleged that Congress lost because Chavan did not carry out the responsibility of distributing election funds from the party to candidates all over the state.

Addressing his first press conference in Mumbai after his election defeat in Kudal assembly constituency, Rane said that generally the party fund is sent through the Chief Minister. When asked what happened to the funds, Rane replied, "Ask the former chief minister."

Rane said that as election campaign committee chief, he would be sending a detailed report about the reasons for the defeat to the party high command. He added that one of the reasons was that many top leaders had conceded defeat much before the elections. He said that he would ask the Congress leadership to take action against these leaders.

Rane said that he would not contest any more assembly elections, but kept his options open about the legislative council or the Rajya Sabha.

Rane also said that Shiv Sena chief Uddhav Thackeray had bowed down before the Bharatiya Janata Party just to get power. Rane said, "He is bringing down Sena's name. Had late Balasaheb Thackeray been alive, he would have preferred sitting in the opposition instead of accepting such humiliation every day from BJP.'

Rane said chief minister Devendra Fadnavis should resign as chief minister before speaking of creating Vidarbha out of Maharashtra. Rane said that Fadnavis should not forget that he is chief minister of Maharashtra, which includes Vidarbha.
