A city hospital conducted a mock drill as part of its Ambulance Drive awareness campaign. This was because nowadays vehicles do not allow ambulances to pass by despite hearing the siren. This affects the patient, who needs to reach the hospital on time. Many a times, traffic delays the patient's admittance in the emergency care unit.

Vile Parle-based Nanavati Super Specialty Hospital conducted this campaign called 'Mujhe Rasta Do' or 'Give-Me-Way' on Saturday to create awareness amongst drivers. The hospital wanted to check preparedness in case of emergency conditions. The drill included ten different ambulances travelling from different locations across the city trying to reach Nanavati Hospital in the shortest time span.

"Many a times, the ambulance gets blocked in traffic creating delay. Also, people try to drive behind the ambulance thinking its passage will help them reach their destinations faster. Such mock drills will certainly create awareness," said an ambulance driver.

The Mumbai Police is already working on this issue, and has held its own awareness campaigns. Abhay Soi, chairman, Nanavati Hospital, said "Mumbai is a city and where the population is swelling. There should be quaternary healthcare institutions with dedicated emergency units and a strong network of advanced ambulance services for the holistic care of those in dire need of medical attention."

Along with the mock drill, the hospital also launched its Emergency Care Centre inaugurated by Dr Deepak Sawant, minister of health. He said "The state of Maharashtra has been thoughtful about creating the green corridor for a heart transplant. Chennai was the first Indian city to create a green corridor for a heart transplant. However, recently, a green corridor between the hospital in Pune to the airport and another one from Mumbai's Santa Cruz airport to Mulund was created at a moment's notice. There is an urgent need to create an ambulance freeway to address emergency medical care needs within the shortest period of time. The state health ministry will definitely work towards such initiatives with the state road transport department."
