The political wrangling over the ambitious $44-billion refinery and petrochemical complex at Nanar in Ratnagiri district has intensified with Shiv Sena's growing criticism of the project and other parties trying to earn brownie points.

Sena president Uddhav Thackeray held a rally in Nanar on Monday where he declared that his party would not allow the project to come up in Konkan. "I tell you that Nanar would stay and the refinery project has gone."

Siding with his party leader, State Industries Minister and Sena leader Subhash Desai declared on Monday that the notification for land acquisition had been withdrawn.

"I am a Shiv Sainik and if the government thrusts the project upon us, I would quit as a minister in the interest of people of Konkan," Desai said.

The assertion by the top Sena leaders comes less than two weeks after a memorandum of understanding was signed for the proposed refinery in the presence of Union Minister for Petroleum Dharmendra Pradhan in New Delhi.

Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis countered Desai. He said, "Desai has no authority in this regard. A high-power committee under chief secretary has been appointed to take the decision in this regard. Desai has expressed his personal opinion." Radhakrishna Vikhe-Patil, leader of Opposition in the Assembly, said Sena's opposition is nothing but part of a deal. "It is for Sena and Uddhav Thackeray to disclose as what it would take for settling the deal," he said.

NCP's Nawab Malik too targeted the Sena saying it was indulging in a stunt. He said Sena should clear its stand on the Mumbai-Nagpur super communication expressway. Dhananjay Munde, the leader of Opposition in Legislative Council, said the ruling dispensation was trying to "fool" the people of Konkan.
