A few days ago, residents of a Nalasopara society allegedly tied a stray bitch and two of its pups in an open ground, while killing six more pups by pouring phenyl and some other poisonous substance on them. The police have registered a case and are trying to identify the accused.

According to sources, the residents of Park Villa Co-operative housing society near Patankar Park in Nalasopara (W) were fed up with the dogs creating unhygienic conditions. Bhavna Jogadiya, of the Jignesha Charitable Trust and a member of the Animal Welfare Board of India, complained to the Nalasopara police regarding the incident.

"I saw them dumping the strays. So I immediately rushed to the police station, along with the witnesses, and complained," said Jogadiya. The bitch was beaten up and the pups were killed with some poison. The residents also poured phenyl on them, and some rag pickers dumped the corpses. Meanwhile, a veterinarian was called and the strays were taken back to the society, as its illegal to relocate them," she added.

A witness told dna, "We used to feed the strays, but many society members were against it. So they decided to do away with them."

When contacted, John Tapp, secretary of the housing society, said, "We have no intention of kill the strays. The bitch had bit a society resident and the strays were causing unbearable stench. That is why they were taken to an open ground."

Anil Shinde, the investigating official at the Nalasopara police station, said, "We have registered a case under section 429 (mischief by killing or maiming an animal) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and under relevant sections of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act."
