Ten-year-old Nalasopara boy Ali Haider Shaikh, who died in his society lift mishap on Tuesday, was forcefully sent with his brother to a salon for a haircut. However, he returned home and partially stepped into the lift when, due to some technical snag, it started automatically, crushing him between the first and the ground floor.

The Nalasopara police haven’t yet registered a case against the office-bearers of the Sai Dham Tower. They will talk to the civic body and take action against the person/s responsible for the tragedy. However, the father of the victim is insisting that a case be filed against the office-bearers as he had on several occasions complained to them against the ill-functioning of the lift.

“The post-mortem revealed that the boy died due to asphyxiation. We will take the help of technical experts to find out if the society members had flouted any norms. If they are found to have been negligent, we will arrest them,” said Dhananjay Jagdale, assistant police inspector, Nalasopara police station.

“I had sent my elder son and Ali to trim their hair. But Ali refused and in order to come back home, he entered the lift. The negligence of a few people cost my son’s life,” rued Rashid Shaikh, the victim’s father. Now, the bereaved father wants the society members to be punished.
