The law has finally caught up with a notorious Nalasopara goon a week after he assaulted, stripped and groped a woman on a busy street. Ravi Bidlan, who has several cases of extortion and murder against him but roamed free in the area owing to his clout, was arrested on Wednesday with a pistol in his possession.

The Nalasopara police have made the arrest after the woman was assaulted twice. The second time she approached them, they had advised her to throw chilli powder at Bidlan's face if he attacked her again, and then inform them.

On June 28, dna had reported how on June 23, Bidlan slapped a 32-year-old woman while she was walking along Gala Nagar road with her nephew, accusing her of not letting his car through. When she tried to reason with him, he allegedly groped her and tore off her clothes while passers-by just watched.

The woman went to Nalasopara police station to lodge a complaint. They registered an FIR against him, but did not arrest him. The charges pressed were all bailable offences. The non-bailable section 354 (outraging the modesty of a woman) was not part of the FIR at that time.

On coming to know of the complaint, Bidlan broke into the woman's house and told her to strip naked and then apologise to him. When she refused, they chased her out of the house and locked it. The woman approached the police once again. This time, a senior police officer told her to first throw chilli powder on Bidlan if he attacked her again and then inform him.

The police finally sprung into action with a combing operation in search of Bidlan. They even raided the den of Ravi's brother and gang leader Pawan. Ravi managed to flee, but Pawan was arrested with three other accused for allegedly assaulting a police officer. They caught Ravi later.

“We had taken a re-statement of the woman and have arrested Ravi Bidlan under section 354 (molestation),509 (word, gesture or act intended to insult modesty of woman), 506 (criminal intimidation), 507 (criminal intimidation through anonymous communication), 427 (mischief causing damage upto Rs 50) of the Indian Penal Code and under relevant sections of the Arms Act,” said Ravindra Badguzar, senior inspector of Nalasopara police station.

“We have seized an Indian-made pistol and are investigating further. The woman is safe and we have offered her two constables for safety,” added inspector Badguzar.
