For two years, commuters at Naigaon, Vasai and Virar railway stations have been waiting for the railway over bridge (ROB) along with the approach bridge on Sopara creek to come up at Naigaon (East).

But, the project has been stuck for want of clearances from various government authorities.

“Commuters are currently inconvenienced as the tehsildar’s office, panchayat samiti’s office, police station and other public utilities are located in Vasai (West). So, people have to go to Vasai (West) via Gokhivare, an extra 10-km travel,” said Nandkumar Chaudhary of Tiwari village in Naigaon (East).

“There is only one iron pedestrian bridge on Sopara creek to the station in Naigaon (East), which too is in a dilapidated condition.”

He added that the rail over bridge would improve the connectivity to Mumbai and would be beneficial for fishing business. The MMRDA is awaiting permissions from the ministry of environment and forest and the Maharashtra Coastal Zone Management Authority (MCZMA), as the area falls under coastal regulation zone-1.

“Though we had invited tenders for the project two years ago, but we had to postpone it till we get the required clearances from the various government agencies. Till date, we have got permission from the railways and have submitted the required documents to MCZMA,” a senior MMRDA official said.

“After obtaining the required permissions the tenders will be re-invited immediately,” said Dilip Kawathkar, MMRDA spokesperson. He hinted that it could be by March-end or in April.
But, another MMRDA official said that the actual work would start after monsoon. “We are yet to acquire the land from the salt department, which owns the land, and get the go-ahead from the high court, which might take a few more months,” he added.
