Two days after the unfortunate incident, parents of Gloria Menezes (15), who committed suicide by hanging on Monday night, are still wondering what made their only daughter take such a drastic step. Menezes had secured first class in her Secondary School Certificate (SSC) board examinations this year, but had failed to clear the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) paper, a graded subject.

Incidentally, as many as 9,720 students failed to clear this particular exam this year despite scoring well in other subjects, while two students committed suicide in Kurla itself.

Despite suffering from a learning disability, Gloria had scored 61.8% in her SSC board exam in best five subjects. According to her mother Gretta, she was quick to learn and was sure of passing the ICT exam as well.

"She used to be the first one to finish any project given in the class. Despite a learning disability, she didn't take the help of a writer for the exam. She never required extra time in any of the papers. She, however, did not discuss anything related to the school with me. The school authorities had assured her that she will get admission in a nearby junior college, as she had failed only in a graded subject. On June 8, we took her to the board office in Vashi to apply for a copy of her ICT exam answer sheet. We haven't received any message from the board officials yet," said Gretta.

Helen Corriea, principal of the Holy Cross High School in Kurla where Gloria studied, said, "We had informed Gloria that she needn't worry about her admission as she had passed in her best five subjects. We have no idea why she took such a drastic step. She was liked by all her teachers."

When contacted, Mumbai division board chairman Duttatray Jagtap said, "After applying for a copy of an answer sheet, it usually takes a week to get it. But if there are many applications, it takes longer. Till now, we have cleared the applications submitted till June 6."
