History enthusiasts will get to learn about the past of Dr Bhau Daji Lad. A museum walk will be conducted on Saturday, to celebrate the foundation site’s anniversary.

One of the oldest museums in the city, it will celebrate its 154th anniversary as the foundation stone for the institution was installed on November 19, 1862. The tour will be conducted in three different languages, English, Marathi, and Hindi.

The building was originally designed by William Tracey, an engineer with the Public Works Department, which was later handed over to Scott McClelland and Co. due to his untimely death.

By May 1872, the construction was completed and the architectural elements were manufactured and imported from England. According to museum officials, the design of the building highlights contemporary art of the 19th century.

BDL Museum is the third oldest museum in the country. Speaking about the museum, Ruta Waghmare, Coordinator of educational activities in the museum said, “The Museum was earlier known as the Government Central Museum with an emphasis on natural history and geology. In 1855 the collection of artifacts for the museum started and by 1858 it was stocked in the Town Hall of Asiatic Society of Mumbai. Later, on November 19, 1862, the foundation of the new building was laid. George Birdwood was appointed curator of the museum and a committee was formed which included members like Dr Bhau Daji Lad and Jaganath Shunkerseth to raise funds for constructing a new museum building.”

The museum organises tours over the weekend and also conducts workshop for various age groups.

Expressing about the highlights of the one hour museum tour, Ruta said, “The tour begins by showing the foundation stone of the building. We focus on the architectural details as it signifies the historic Italian renaissance style of architect. The capital of the columns are interesting as they have terracotta pillars. We will also be highlighting the history of the museum.”
