The family of constable Vilas Shinde was overjoyed to hear that the Juvenile Justice Board permitted Khar police to treat one of his murderers, a minor, as an adult in the trial.

However, even as justice seems closer, the promised ex gratia amount of Rs 25 lakh along with the assurance of a government job and a residence for the family seem quite distant.

“I had been assured that we would get a job soon. We have been in touch with government officials,” said Deepesh, who added that he wished to join his deceased father’s profession.

“I denied a job offered in the wireless department and requested a posting in the Mumbai police. The department assured us of a job and I shall be getting a posting quite soon,” Deepesh stated.

The wife has demanded death penalty for the accused while the son continues to await for the job and the compensation which were promised by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis two months ago.

On the afternoon of August 23, constable Shinde from Bandra traffic division was discharging his duty at a petrol pump in Khar when he spotted a biker without helmet approaching the petrol pump.

Shinde then asked the biker to show his vehicular documents and licence. The said biker then indulged in an argument with Shinde and phoned his brother Ahmed Mohammad Ali Qureshi, who too reached the spot within minutes and joined the argument.

Qureshi then took a wooden plank from the spot and banged it on Shinde’s head. Qureshi and his brother then fled the place

Shinde died nine days later as the two assailants were booked for murder.

Shinde’s widow Sadhana said, “We want the two accused to be given death penalty as they can’t be forgiven for the crime.”

Echoing his mother, Shinde’s son Deepesh, said, “We are happy that the murderer is being treated as an adult. This means that they will regret their whole life for having killed my father. Such elements are a curse to society.”

Even the Shindes’ neighbours were elated with the board’s decision to treat the minor as an adult.

Laxmi Gavane, a neighbour and wife of a retired constable from Santacruz police station, said, “We were shocked to learn about the incident and staged a protest when the CM came to the chawl. It is good to know that the strictest of action shall be taken. We hope that both the accused are hanged to death.”

Deepesh, acknowledging the police department, said, “The department has supported us throughout and have acted as a strong backbone for us.”

DROWN AND OUT

Months after Shinde’s murder police sub-inspector Nitin Dengale was managing the immersion process at Kalyan-east based artificial pond.

One of the mandal members began an altercation with Dengale and attempted to murder the policeman by drowning him in the pond.
