An angry woman hacked her daughter-in-law and her mother after serving them food laced with sedatives. She later turned herself in to the police, along with the weapons used for the crime.

On August 6, Rashida Vasani (56), a resident of Mumbra's Narayan Nagar, had an argument with her daughter-in-law Salma (24) and Salma's mother Shamim Sheikh (54). Salma had given birth to a girl 45 days ago and her mother, a resident of Kurla, had come to take care of the newborn.

"Rashida's son Maqdum and Salma got married four years ago. They moved out of Rashida's house and started living at Simla Park in Mumbra. Reportedly, Rashida would often fight with the couple over the matter" said a Mumbra police officer.

Last Saturday, yet another argument erupted between Rashida, Maqdum and his in-laws. Rashida then allegedly bought a knife, a sickle and sedatives. She then visited Salma on Monday afternoon while Maqdum was at work.

"She mixed the sedatives in the food. After Salma and Shamim lost consciousness, she hit them on their heads with the back of the sickle. Then she slit their throats," said the officer.

At the time, Salma's 2.5-year-old son and the infant daughter were present in the house. Afterwards, Rashida took both her grandchildren to the Mumbra police station, along with the weapons, and surrendered. "She confessed to the crime and gave us the weapons. We have arrested her and produced her in the court," the cop added.

Police have registered a case under section 302 (murder) and 328 (administering poison) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).
