For the next two months, motorists from Navi Mumbai, Kalyan, Dombivli, driving through Mumbra bypass to reach Thane and JNPT will have to face diversions as the bypass will be undergoing repairs. Authorities have decided to try and finish the repair work in two, instead of the predicted six months.

From April 16, Mumbra bypass will remain shut due to repair of the four-lane Mumbra bypass bridge. "The bridge has potholes which are dangerous and hence, it has been decided to undertake urgent repair works," said an official from Thane traffic police. "Earlier, the PWD department had said that the repairs would take six months but now a two-month period has been decided on, which might be extended by a month," he said.

This will affect the traffic coming from Bhiwandi, Taloja, Panvel, JNPT which uses the Mumbra bypass road. Even outstation vehicles from Delhi, Ahmedabad Nashik use this road to go to Panvel, JNPT, Pune and beyond. "Now the vehicles will be diverted from Kalyan phata, Kalyan-Badlapur road. Motorists and other small vehicles will also have to go through the Mumbra village road," he says.

Since the movement of heavy vehicles cannot be avoided, they will ply on the Mumbra bypass route at night. During the day, they will be parked at CIDCO's plot in Navi Mumbai and BMC's truck terminal in Mumbai.
