Day one of the 2-day-long Go Green carnival at Khar Gymkhana saw various eco-friendly workshops bustling with people on Saturday morning. It kicked off with competitions for kids and adults like 'Best of out of waste', poster making, collage, cap and apron painting and also a gas-less cooking competition. Workshops of the day included water life and rain water harvesting, where people were shown the benefits of installing such a system in their housing societies. People were also taught to make natural colour dyes from flowers and coconut shells.

Children and adults participating in the gas-less cooking competition served up mouth-watering dishes. 13-year-old Aara Kapadia made hummus with pita bread, Labanah, salad and lavash. "You realise that when food is made without using gas, it retains the natural properties of vegetables and fruits which might get lost after heating them. You also save energy by not using gas and electricity," she said.

The event had more than 600 visitors. Pushpa Suryamurti, one of the organisers, said, "The feedback has been encouraging and positive. We have received requests to have such events on a regular basis. The members brought their kids and have thoroughly enjoyed learning more about the environment," she said.

Besides a street play on saving trees and a Bihu dance, the carnival boasted of stalls that educated people on LED lighting, composting, eco-friendly agro products, composting products, bird feeders and NGOs supporting eco-friendly initiatives through art, craft and clothes. The stall areas were done up with plants growing in discarded aerated drinks bottles and bamboo sticks along with seating areas made of tires and smaller plastic bottles.

There was also a photo exhibit by the Khar Gymkhana photography team on the theme of energy. The go-green carnival also included demonstrations of electric cars besides bicycles.
