The Aarey forest has always been in the eye of the storm and in the crossfire of politics and development, with the tribals living in this forest the most affected. Hence, empowering them has become more imperative than ever, especially the tribal women. With this intention, WWH Charitable Trust arranged an event at Aarey to involve people in empowering the tribal women.

A ‘sit down authentic lunch’ with the tribals of Aarey was organised recently, the funds of which were given directly to the tribal women, who had prepared the lunch. This initiative gave the women a chance to showcase their talent in cooking the lesser-celebrated authentic tribal cuisine and also to interact with people from different walks of life.

A warm welcome

Tucked in the interiors of Aarey, a little ahead of the Aarey CEO’s office, is an opening that leads to a few huts belonging to the tribals. These small but beautifully painted huts had Warli art all over the walls. It was quite a sight as the area was brimming with energy and enthusiastic tribal kids running around to help their mothers. The tribal women were seated down preparing the food on the hearth (traditional Indian wood-fired stove) and readying it for the guests.

The lunch spread

Kokum sherbet made organically proved to be extremely relieving as a starter refresher. Few of the delicacies prepared for the lunch included high-nutrient ragi roti and rice roti, spicy dal and rice, stuffed eggplant and potato and drumsticks sabzi for the vegetarians. For the non-vegeterians, there was finger-licking chicken curry, sukha zinga and fried bombil. A lot of time and effort was spent by the women in order to cater to all the guests, which was appreciated by one and all. The food turned out to be extremely delicious with the hearth cooking adding a nice flavour to it.

An empowering initiative

Apart from food, the event offered the guests an opportunity to try Warli art as well as mehndi for art lovers. For shopaholics, there were pretty bags put up for sale by the foundation as well as a variety of saplings like curry leaves, lemongrass, tomato, capsicum and a few more herbs, all completely organic. The money collected from the lunch event, attended by 87 people in addition to all the products that were sold, has been given to the tribal women. The city needs several such events, which will help people connect with the tribals living in the heart of the city and also to empower them.
