Mischief can cost you dear, as a 23-year-old youth recently found out after he was arrested for allegedly making abusive and obscene calls to policewomen at the main police control room late in the night. The Azad Maidan police arrested him for allegedly demanding sexual favours from a woman constable and also abusing her and her colleagues.
The arrested youth has been identified as Sadanand Lad, a resident of Morava village, Bhayander (West). The complainant in the case is a 21-year-old woman constable, who joined the force in 2009 and is posted with the Worli local arms division. She is deployed in the main control room at the commissioner of police office in Crawford Market.
"Preliminary probe revealed Lad had made the calls with the intention to do mischief. At the time of the offence, he was under the influence of alcohol. However, the police are awaiting his medical report," said an officer from Azad Maidan police station.
According to the police, on October 14 at 12.35am, the alert citizen desk of the control room received a phone call from an unknown person.
"The caller refused to identify himself and told the complainant, who received the call, that he wants to meet her. When the constable told him that he had called the control room, the caller started abusing her and demanding sexual favours from her, following which the constable cut the call," said a police source.
The source added that the person made several calls to the other desks in the control room and abused and threatened the constable's colleagues as well.
On October 14, a complaint was filed against the youth at Azad Maidan police station. During investigation, the police traced the number from which the calls had come and found the culprit. Lad is employed in a private firm.
The police have booked Lad under sections 506 (criminal intimidation) and 509 (word, gesture or act intended to insult the modesty of a woman) of the Indian Penal Code.
