The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has issued notices to Worli’s high-profile Sukhada and Shubhada housing societies, warning them of attachment of properties. The societies house well-known leaders from the Congress, NCP and BJP.
The corporation issued the notices on Thursday for non-clearance of dues to the tune of Rs16.37 crore. The societies have been given 21 days to clear the dues, failing which the BMC will start attaching the properties. According to administrative procedures, auction of properties will follow their attachment. The dues are pending since 2006-07, a senior civic official revealed.
“The societies were issued notices in April last year for illegal alterations made to their structures. Besides, another notice was served asking them to clear the pending property tax and water bills by September 30. They made partial payments of around Rs2.6 crore. The latest notices are for the remaining amount,” a BMC official said, requesting not to be named.
The official further said that the notices to the societies were served as part of the drive it had undertaken to attach properties of defaulters. “Those who owe huge amounts figure in the list,” he added.
On asked, Ranjit Deshmukh, former Congress state unit president and chairman of Shubhada society, claimed lack of knowledge regarding the notice. “I am not in Mumbai. So, have no clue about the notice. Please speak to Vijay Sawant,” said Deshmukh.
Sawant is an MLC and a member of Shubhada society. Despite several attempts, Sawant could not be reached for his comments.
