As the need to learn self-defence is rising among women of all walks of life, why should women traffic constables be left behind?

The Mumbai traffic police department is planning to impart self-defence training to them. This will help women traffic constables tackle aggressive offenders while  manning major junctions in the city.

“Of the 3,000 personnel in the traffic police department, 315 of them are women,” said joint commissioner of police (traffic), Vivek Phansalkar.

Four women constables were attacked by male offenders at various traffic junctions in the city in 2012, he said.

“We decided to train them to instil confidence in them and help them handle their attackers,” he added.

Phansalkar said that the idea is still in the planning stage and that they are yet to decide on whether they will rope in any martial art expert to train the women personnel.

“After we finish planning, the women constables will be trained on the premises of the traffic police institute at Byculla for a few weeks,” he said.

Besides giving them self-defence training, the women constables will also be trained in communication skills. This is to ensure they keep in touch with police personnel at the nearest police chowky as well as local shopkeepers and residents in the area they are manning. If case there is a situation where they are attacked, the constables can seek help to nab the offender.

Moreover, traffic policemen patrolling on motorbikes will frequently check traffic junctions where  women traffic cops are deployed and will be in touch with them constantly so they can assist them during emergencies.

Phansalkar added that traffic police officers will pursue such cases registered at police stations across the city and see to it that the offenders are punished by courts.
